Today, I will talk about a topic that has been particularly close to my heart lately, as I observe the world around me and work on the land. I will talk about self-sufficiency. I often hear that looking after oneself, one's garden, and one's food is a form of selfishness or closing oneself off from the world. But let me tell you – self-sufficiency is your greatest responsibility and priority.
In a world where we are constantly dependent on shops, other people's decisions, and systems that dictate what we eat and how we live, agriculture and knowing how to grow at least a little something yourself is true freedom. When I go out to help my father or when I work on the land, I don't feel selfish. I feel strong. I know what I'm eating, I know how much effort went into growing those vegetables, and above all, I know that I'm not dependent on anyone else.
Self-sufficiency isn't just about what's on your plate. It's also about knowing how to set your own priorities. Have you ever found yourself spending all your time and energy on others, while your "own field" remained untilled? If you don't take care of yourself first, you can't really help anyone else. It's like working on a farm—if you don't have the tools and you're not strong enough, the work simply won't get done.
People will always have something to say. They'll tell you that you're exaggerating, that you're distancing yourself too much, or that you should be more "sociable." But my priority is my peace and my independence. If you don't like that I take time to work outside instead of pointless chatting over coffee – there's the door. I choose contact with nature, contact with the earth and animals, because it grounds me.
When you start taking care of yourself—both physically and mentally—you realize that this is the foundation for everything else. By being self-sufficient, by knowing how to survive on your own and with your work, you become fearless. Nothing can throw you off track so easily anymore because you know you have your own land under your feet and your own life in your hands.
So I urge you: don't be afraid to put yourself first. Plant that first seed, set boundaries with people who steal your time, and don't apologize for wanting to be independent. Self-sufficiency is the path to freedom that no amount of money can buy.
Hugs, Eva
