Today you will learn something about Christmas facts:

 1. In the US alone, 30-35 million real Christmas trees are sold each year. There are about 21,000 Christmas tree growers in the U.S., and trees typically grow for about 15 years before being sold.

2. In the Middle Ages, Christmas celebrations were lively and lavish - similar to today's Mardi Gras parties.

3. When Christmas was canceled (from 1659 to 1681) the celebration of Christmas in Boston was prohibited and violators were fined five shillings.


4. Christmas was declared a federal holiday in the United States on June 26, 1870.

5. Poinsettias are named after Joel R. Poinsett, the American minister who brought the red-green plant from Mexico to America in 1828.

6. Rudolph, "the most famous reindeer of all," was a figment of Robert L. May's imagination in 1939. The songwriter wrote a song about reindeer to attract customers to Montgomery Ward department store.
