Every year, the summer heat forces us to find the best ways to cool down, and absolutely nothing hits the spot better than a scoop or a bar of our favorite ice cream. These July days are especially sweet all around the world, as this is precisely the time when we celebrate International Ice Cream Day—making it the perfect excuse to indulge in this frozen treat completely guilt-free. Ice cream is truly one of those rare things that connects people across all generations and cultures, no matter where on the planet we are. Its history is incredibly rich and full of fascinating facts; ancient civilizations like the Romans and the Chinese already knew how to treat themselves to a refreshment by mixing snow, ice, fruit, and honey, which is considered an ancient ancestor of today's sorbets.
Over the centuries, this delicacy evolved into a true culinary art form, and with its development came some downright fascinating facts. Did you know that the very first officially recorded recipe for an ice cream similar to today's dairy-based version originated in China, and was supposedly brought to Europe much later by the traveler Marco Polo? When the first ice cream cones appeared in the last century, they were created completely by accident at a fair: an ice cream vendor ran out of bowls, and the neighboring waffle vendor jumped in to help by rolling his waffles into cones. Even when it comes to flavor popularity around the globe, a special rule applies: despite thousands of modern and exotic combinations like salted caramel or lavender, classic vanilla still reigns supreme on the global throne, closely followed by chocolate.
It is also interesting to see how different cultures enjoy this frozen dessert, as recipes vary greatly from country to country. While in Italy they swear by their creamy and denser gelato, which contains less fat and is served at a slightly higher temperature, on the other side of the world in Japan, they love mochi ice cream wrapped in sticky rice dough. All these different approaches show us how unique and yet universal the love for this dessert is. So, whether you are celebrating Ice Cream Day today or treating yourself in a few days, take a moment, pick your favorite flavor, and simply enjoy this sweet summer ritual that brings a smile to our faces every single time.
Hugs,
Eva
